where love is alive

Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth. For they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks.  God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in spirit and truth.  John 4:23-24

What does it means that the Father is seeking worshipers, and not just any worshipers but those who will worship Him in spirit and truth?   What does it mean to worship in spirit and truth?    We can’t just worship God with our minds.  We have to worship Him with our entire being.  It has to be emotional, physical, and mental.  “Love the Lord your God with all your Heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.” Mark 12:30 When Jesus is talking to the Samaritan woman about worship He is telling her not only is God looking for your intellectual worship, He is looking for it to be a whole body expression of worship.  I believe when He is referencing “truth” here He is talking about your mind, but when he is saying “spirit” He is referring to our heart and soul.  God doesn’t just want us to give Him intellectual lip service He wants us to feel it in the very most parts of our heart and soul.  He wants passionate worship.  Where do we feel from?  It is our heart and our soul.  Our love for God has to also be rooted in passion or else it is just an intellectual experience that never goes deeper than our thoughts about God.  God gave us an example of a great worshiper in David.  Did David have it all right?  No, he failed God.  He did wrong.  He had his moments of doubt, but he never gave up on God.  He had a balance between the head and the heart.  He didn’t just let the emotion of a situation take him over and tell him it was impossible when he knew in his mind that God was still on the throne and would take care of him.  Psalm 43 is a testimony of that as are many of the psalms.  But also he didn’t let his mind control his emotion in worshiping God.  When he worshiped he was all in.  When he brought the Ark back to Jerusalem in 2 Samuel 6 it says “14 Wearing a linen ephod, David was dancing before the Lord with all his might, 15 while he and all Israel were bringing up the ark of the Lord with shouts and the sound of trumpets.16 As the ark of the Lord was entering the City of David, Michal daughter of Saul watched from a window. And when she saw King David leaping and dancing before the Lord, she despised him in her heart… 20 When David returned home to bless his household, Michal daughter of Saul came out to meet him and said, “How the king of Israel has distinguished himself today, going around half-naked in full view of the slave girls of his servants as any vulgar fellow would!”21 David said to Michal, “It was before the Lord, who chose me rather than your father or anyone from his house when he appointed me ruler over the Lord’s people Israel—I will celebrate before the Lord. 22 I will become even more undignified than this, and I will be humiliated in my own eyes. But by these slave girls you spoke of, I will be held in honor.”  He was the king and he was before his entire kingdom but he didn’t care what they thought. He didn’t let his mind take over the emotion that he knew God had delivered His Glory to Jerusalem.  He did let what people might think of him keep him from worshiping God like he knew God deserved passionately and with his whole being.  Let us work at being more like David in our worship.  Let’s not let the circumstances dictate our worship but let us have a balance of heart and mind and worship God with all that we are in “spirit and truth.”

God Bless
