Sparkly Things

16 Rejoice always, 17 pray without ceasing, 18 in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.

1 Thessalonians 1:16-18

In the season of Thanksgiving we often reflect on the all of the things that we are thankful for.  Usually they are big, grand things like family, home, friends, food, jobs, etc. …. you get the idea.  But how many times do we stop to thank God for the small things?  The minute things that bring us joy.  With our children, Leah and I have made it a habit whenever we pray whether it is for dinner, at bed time, or even if we are praying for someone who is sick, that we thank God for His blessings.  There are usually multiple things that are mentioned.  We are trying to instill in our children an attitude of thankfulness because, let’s be honest, it is easy in our world to forget where everything comes from, and that we are truly blessed beyond measure, need, or even what we deserve.

Recently, Natalie has started asking to pray out loud before bedtime.  Her prayers are always cute and amusing.  The way children think has always intrigued me, but I think that there is a reason Jesus said, “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.”  Natalie was praying the other night and, of course, she always thanks God for Mommy and Daddy, and the big things, and then she said, “Thank you God for all of the things that sparkle in the sun.”  That struck me.  How many times do I think about the small and wonderful things that God has given me that bring joy and light into my life?  I try very hard to live a thankful life but, many times I get lost in the business of life and forget to be truly thankful.  So, let’s stop and take a few moments to be thankful for the small things as well.  Let’s learn to live thankful, joy filled lives every day and not just in November because the holiday calls us to reflect and be thankful.  Let’s face it, this world could use a lot more thankful people in it, and fewer entitled people.  As Paul instructed in the scripture at the top “In Everything give thanks.”

Be blessed and thankful,

Lanny
