How Happiness Happens

“It is more blessed to give than receive” (Acts 20:35)

I am currently teaching a discipleship class on Sunday evenings by Max Lacado, entitled, “How Happiness Happens.”  In this study we are learning that the motto on the front door of the world states, “Happiness happens when you get.”  The sign on the lesser-used back door counters, “Happiness happens when you give.”  And standing at the entry way to welcome you is Jesus of Nazareth.

As I dig further into this study, I am discovering how this principle not only applies to us individually, but actually applies directly to our church and Sunday School.  Max goes on to say that Jesus was accused of much, but he was never described as a grump, sourpuss, or self-centered jerk.  People didn’t groan when he appeared.  They didn’t duck for cover when he entered the room.  He called them by name.  He listened to their stories.  He answered their questions.  Jesus was happy, and he wants us and all those around us to be happy also.  Are you beginning to see a correlation between this study and church?

As we continue to work TOGETHER in this new year 2020, let us become intentional in being happy and loving those around us and ministering to their needs.  How do we become intentional?  I’m so glad you asked…the answer is…TOGETHER we must focus on others.  The “one another” passages listed below are a great place to start.

  1. Accept one Another (Romans 15:7)
  2. Bear With One Another (Ephesians 4:2)
  3. Serve One Another (Galatians 5:13)
  4. Forgive One Another (Ephesians 4:32)
  5. Carry One Another’s Burdens (Galatians 6:2)
  6. Love One Another (1 John 3:11)

TOGETHER, let’s be intentional this week to live out the six “one another” statements listed above.  As Max Lacado stresses, we live on a lonely planet.  Broken hearts and disappointed people are everywhere.  The world is desperate, but we can help…we know the One who can fill us with genuine joy.  We need to make this joy known.  If you brighten your corner of the world and I do the same in mine, a revolution of joy just might break out.  Let’s strive to make a difference TOGETHER.

Invite someone to Sunday School this week!
