where love is alive

Recently I had a bit of maintenance duty to address at my house. It seems some kind of residue had found its way onto a couple of bathroom walls.  It was a bit sticky and left a light shadow upon the wall itself. It certainly was not a look that could be left unaddressed!  It was so bad that I was convinced I would ultimately need to paint the wall to make it right.  But before I could paint, I knew I had to get the wall as clean as possible.  I pondered the option of what cleaning agent to use on those walls.  There were the standard multipurpose cleaners such as Formula 409 or Fantastik.  I thought about using something more natural like vinegar.  I even considered some dishwashing liquid to cut through the stickiness.

My wisest act was to seek out the counsel of our church caretaker, Tiffany Hawkins.  She pointed me to a product in an aerosol can designed specifically for sheetrock walls.  Her instructions were simple: “Spray it on then wipe it off immediately with a clean cloth or it will take off the paint.”

Later that day, armed with the product and a clean cloth, I stood before the stained wall and followed Tiffany’s instruction to the letter: Spray On…Wipe Off.  Spray on…Wipe Off. I was AMAZED! The residue quickly disappeared. A few follow up applications and the wall looked GREAT!  Needless to say, I was impressed!  In no time I stood before my now clean wall and the thought came to me:  “I don’t need to paint this wall at all!” It had cleaned up that nicely!  I was ready to do a lot of work to make things right, when a simple cleaning with the right product got the job done.

Of course, there is a spiritual lesson not to be missed.  Our lives are marred with the residue of sin.  Our initial reaction is to find a way to cover the stain. We might try putting on a better attitude or applying a layer of good behavior. Some may add a coat of “religious” actions in their lives like going to church.  But what we really need is a good cleaning with something powerful enough to instantly and completely remove that stain of sin. Fortunately, there is one thing that gets the job done: The Grace of Jesus.  Applied by faith, this Amazing Grace can instantly and completely “wash away our sin” and “makes us whole again.”

Experiencing the newness of life through Jesus, we are inspired to live a life of service and worship to the Lord. Understand, these are not activities to MAKE us clean. Rather they are actions we take BECAUSE our record is clean, our stains are gone.  In Christ, the old has gone and the new has come! (2 Corinthians 5:17)

Pastor’s P.S.  This is the last Sunday we will be receiving gifts for the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering for International Missions. We are quite a bit below our goal, so all help is welcome.
