 The Open Door Sunday School Class is sponsoring a food drive during the month of May. Charlie Hysinger will be going on a mission trip to help the Navaho Indians in New Mexico. Collection boxes are in the Welcome Center, the MAC building and Annex for canned and box food items for the people they will be helping.

 Church-wide Fellowship to see the Chattanooga Lookouts play the Jacksonville Suns on Sunday, May 27. A limited number of General Admission tickets are available from the church office at $3.00 each. The van will leave at 5:00 p.m. or you can meet us at the AT&T Field. Sign up on the registration form or call the church office to reserve your tickets and/or seat on the van (14 seats on the van). Betty Baumgardner will also have tickets available in the Welcome Center Sunday morning. The ballgame starts at 6:15 p.m. Fireworks will take place after the game.

 Mile of Pennies: Our children and preschoolers have completed their “mile of pennies” for the His Vision…Our Purpose Campaign. If you line up $844.80 in pennies it is the equivalent of one mile. They have collected a total of $845.44. You made it…now let’s celebrate! On Wednesday, May 23, we will honor this accomplishment with a one-mile walk from the church to Perkits Yogurt. There, we will enjoy the creamy goodness of frozen yogurt. Best of all it is free to kids, leaders, and parents who participate in the walk. Parents/guardians, are welcome to join us. We will depart from the church Welcome Center at 6:45 p.m.  Please arrange for pick up transportation at Perkits Yogurt at 7:30 p.m. (We will have a police escort.)

       In the weeks ahead we will continue our Sunday morning sermon series on PARENTHOOD.  Last Sunday we looked at The Priority of Parenting and how God desires that the home be the primary way through which spiritual lessons and values are spread.  The conclusion and motivation for working toward better families remains sound:  There are very few broken things in our world that would not be improved by better/stronger homes. 

       The ministry and responsibility to our family is such a crucial mission field for people of faith.  I recently read a story about King Henry III of Bavaria who lived in the eleventh century.  It seemed the monarch grew weary of court life and the pressures of being the king, so he applied to a monastery to be accepted for a life of contemplation.  The religious superior, a Godly man named Richard, said to Henry, Your Majesty, do you understand that the pledge here is one of obedience.  That will be hard for you because you have been a king. You are accustomed to people obeying you.  Henry replied, I understand. Nonetheless, the rest of my life I will be obedient to you as Christ leads you.  After a moment’s pause, the Richard shared with Henry this singular order:  Then, go back to your throne and serve faithfully in the place where God has placed you. 

       Like King Henry we sometimes believe that we need to escape.  Some may even wish to retreat from the responsibilities of family.  But as we learn from the wise counsel of Richard, God puts us in these places, expecting and needing us to serve faithfully there.  Join with us this Sunday morning as we move to the gospels and learn The Principles of Parenting.  While you may not have children in your home, you still can and should devote yourself to the role God has for you in the home. 

        Also, this Sunday morning we will honor our graduating seniors.  Significant achievements merit recognition, ceremony, and celebration.  We look forward to honoring these grads and joining the ranks of family and friends offering our congratulations.  Jay

      This Monday evening, May 21, we have an opportunity to hear Dr. Bobby Welch from the Tennessee Baptist Convention at the “More Life” rally. This event will help challenge us to grow and share our faith with others.  It will be a time of worship, music, and ministry.  I am very excited about this opportunity because we are coming together as Christians across Bradley County to be encouraged to go out and share the gospel. 

       I am also looking forward to the opportunity to hear our associational-wide choir that will be singing at the gathering.  This choir will consist of more than 200 voices lifting their hearts in celebration of the King.  It will be a fantastic time of worship and praise.

       I hope that you will take the time to come and be a part of this service.  It starts at seven o’clock at Clingan Ridge Baptist Church on Georgetown Road.  The service will last approximately an hour and it will be well worth your time and effort to attend.   I hope to see you there.

 Announcement from the Deacons – Over the past few months, our deacons have discussed amending our constitution in a way that raises the required level of church activity necessary for a name to appear on the ballot for our deacon election in August. At the May 16th regular Business Meeting of our church, the deacons will propose an amendment to our church’s constitution toward this end. Copies of this proposal may be found in the Welcome Center, Vestibule, and on the front pew of the sanctuary. Please see one of our active deacons if you have a question.

More Life is a practical approach to equip and empower churches of all sizes to do more discipleship and evangelism.

         We have some great opportunities coming up this summer for our students and the first one is right around the corner!  We will be traveling to Cincinnati Ohio on May 24-25.  On Thursday evening we will watch the Cincinnati Reds play our very own Atlanta Braves! By the way, I fully expect all of our folks to be wearing Braves gear to the game!  We will stay at the Kings’ Island Resort Center that night and the following day we will go to Kings’ Island Theme Park!  The cost for this trip is $70 and will include everything except food.  We have 36 spots available on this trip, and once they are gone…well you get the picture.

            The next adventure our summer will take us on will be our mission project here in Cleveland.  We will be working with Ocoee Outreach the first week of June (June 3-7).  We have two projects lined up: A Children’s Ministry Project called “SplashCamp” and a roofing site.  Our participants will have the option of which one they would prefer.  I do have a major need for a couple of adult volunteers to help be on these sites with our students.  If you have any desire to do this please let me know!  We could use someone with some construction skills, but can use any adult that is just willing to be on the projects.  The cost for our students for the week will be $50.00 and that will include everything! 

            Our annual pilgrimage to the beach for Summer Camp will be June 25-29 to Panama City Beach.  This year it will only include students that will be going into the 9th grade and up.  We will once again be teaming up with Clingan Ridge Baptist Church along with a church from Signal Mountain.  Cost for the week will be $200 until June 10, and then the price goes to $215.  If you have more than one student in your family going, the second student’s tuition will be $150.  It will be a great week of fun and most importantly spiritual growth and relationship building!

       We will conclude our summer of 2012 (can it really be 2012 already???) with our first ever MIDDLE SCHOOL CAMP!  I absolutely can’t wait for this week.  We will be taking students entering into the 6th grade through 8th grade to Carson Springs Baptist Camp in Newport, Tennessee on July 16-19.  This camp will also include Clingan Ridge, the group from Signal Mountain, and another group from Dahlonega, Georgia!  We need chaperones for this one…for some reason not as many chaperones are as excited about going to Newport as they are to Panama City Beach!  So parents, if you are interested in helping with this, we would LOVE to have you.  Cost for students will be $125 until July 1 then it goes to $140.  Students will also have the option of playing paintball one afternoon for an additional cost. 

            It should be a great summer, but as always I covet your prayers.  Pray that our students stay safe and that our group continues to grow together.  Pray that salvation would come and spiritual growth would take place.  Also pray for our leaders and the people that will be speaking, teaching and leading worship at all these events.   Thanks SO much!

CHOOSE POLITENESSS

Love is patient, love is kind. 1 Corinthians 13:4

      As we celebrate Mother’s Day we recognize the priceless value of our moms through the multiple roles she played in our life.  Mothers function as cooks, maids, tutors, chauffeurs, accountants, and nurses.  Still, one of the less recognized roles your mother likely played was Instructor of Etiquette.  In other words, your mom was your first “Miss Manners.”

       Early in your life, even beyond your earliest memories, you were prodded to add the word “please” to a request and to respond “thank you” after the receipt of a kindness.  These early lessons were our introductions to “basic manners.”  As we matured, politeness grew beyond mere “please” and “thank you,” incorporating qualities such as patience and gentleness.  We were taught that exercising these courtesies would, in the end, serve us well. 

        But politeness will always be a choice.  Just as you can choose to be kind, you also can choose to be rude, crass, pushy, grumbling, and inconsiderate. And while these may get you something you desire faster than the route of graciousness, it comes at an expensive cost beyond our ability to measure.

       About a decade ago my family was fortunate enough to go to the Wednesday practice round prior to The Masters golf tournament at Augusta National Country Club. Part of our day was spent watching the annual Par 3 golf tournament. At one hole we were among a mass of spectators sitting along the bank of a hill observing some of the world’s best golfers hit tee shots down toward the green. Well, that is not exactly true.  Not all the spectators sat.  In order to have a better vantage, one lone man chose to stand, consequently blocking the view of numerous patrons.  As one would expect in a gentleman’s game, a person whose view was now obscured spoke out politely to him asking, Sir, would you mind sitting?  The standing man looked back, held a contented look of smugness on his face, and remained on his feet. From somewhere else in the crowd another voice gave a word of commentary to the same standing man, It would be the polite thing to do.  Still he stood as the golfers played through.  Granted, at that moment he got a better view than the rest of us sitting on the hillside.  But what he lost was far greater than what he gained.  He lost the respect of every person who noted his callous and inconsiderate actions. 

        I fear that “common courtesy” is not so common anymore.  But consider this, if you must resort to impoliteness and disrespect to gain something, is it really worth the cost?  Wouldn’t God (and our moms also) prefer that we strive not only for achievement, but that we do so in a well-mannered and considerate spirit?  Jay
